Behind the Brand: Mullein & Sparrow

Smells divine, feels heavenly: floral facial steams from Mullein & Sparrow impart the very best properties of petals onto your face, without chemicals harmful to you or the planet.

Finding luxury in nature is completely possible, and our friends at Mullein & Sparrow are proof of that! Read on as Anit, the founder of Mullein & Sparrow, explains how to ditch the chemicals, and instead draw health, beauty, and inspiration from the world around you.

Mullein & Sparrow is a memorable name, what was the inspiration for it?

Mullein is my favorite herb, and my mom has always called me “sparrow,” so I merged the two together to create something personal and dear to me all around.

Why did you choose to create an eco-conscious, vegan brand?

I personally live an ayurvedic lifestyle, which was instilled in me by my family. At one point, I went backpacking through South America and was introduced to plant-based remedies, skincare and more. If I was sick, I was given herbs versus Tylenol. I wanted to create products that I feel good about putting into the world so it was important for me that they be completely natural and cruelty-free.

We love that both of our brands support Farm Sanctuary.  What was the inspiration or goal behind adopting 12 Days of Giving / sponsoring 12 Farm Sanctuary animals?

We are huge animal lovers and have personally adopted before, but we wanted to do it on a larger scale and this holiday season felt like the perfect time. We hope that this campaign will inspire others to consider adopting as well.

How has Mullein & Sparrow changed your life?

I feel so creatively fulfilled.  I’ve always been the type of person who is brimming with ideas and who often feels inspired by so much of the world that’s it’s great to have an outlet for that energy.

What advice would you give to someone reading this, who is inspired by your story and wanting to start his/her own company?

I absolutely believe in following your heart and pursuing your passion, but you have to be willing to put in the time, money, and effort that it will take to start your own business. Know your limits because your business will no doubt push them.

How important is it for a company to give back to the community?

We believe that those who have the privilege of a voice, a platform of any sort, should be the voice of the voiceless.

What is your daily routine (or maybe first thing you do in the morning)?

Self-reflection and yoga are staples in my routine. It’s a way to clear my head and keep me sane - especially when we’re really busy. I think it’s so important to make time for yourself in some small way every day.

What can you always find in your purse?

Our Immortelle & Myrrh facial serum. It’s such a versatile serum that you can wear in any weather and with any skin type. And it’s perfect for on-the-go because of the roller ball applicator.

 Who is your lifestyle icon?

I’m not sure I have a singular lifestyle icon because, again, I draw inspiration from everywhere.  But I often think of my grandfather both in business and in life generally. He had a factory and it wasn’t until he died that we found out how much charity work and outreach he had done in the community.  Complete strangers came to the house to pay their respects and tell us how he had helped them in one way or another and my mom makes sure to remind me that I have to uphold this lineage of decency and good work in the world.

 Three words to describe yourself?

Driven. Creative. Curious.
